- In what way is ART a tool for activism?

Our current culture - at least in the States - is fed and connected through memes, photographs, and Netflix's poor streaming selection. Art, in the form of photography and film, has the potential to reach people in an unprecedented way since individuals have much more power than in the past to spread their ideas and images without the medium and filter of a mainstream host (apart from a social media platform). Activists can shape this world through shaping their messages into moving and still imagery, song, and various other creative expressions. The world is not eager to hear a manifesto but is rather hungry for beauty, humor, and wit. Art that is imbued with truth is one of the most efficient tools that activists have for implementing wide social change.

- In what way does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

2020: a year of reflection and resistance

as time propels us onward one-way

an uncertain intersection looms.

- What gives you hope?

Shane Claiborne's book "The Irresistible Revolution" and HRW - a picture may not be worth a thousand protests, but it's at least worth one.

BIO

Theophilus Donoghue is a documentary photographer who has been inspired and mentored by his father, renowned photojournalist Steve Schapiro. Like his dad who documented the civil rights movement, Theophilus has a concern for social justice and is currently working on a project in tandem with Schapiro about the Christian social activist Shane Claiborne. Theophilus’ work is at once contemplative and lighthearted. He works primarily in black and white but uses color selectively. Having been raised in LA, NYC, and Chicago, Theophilus has a passion for cities and the poetic beauty they contain. “Hindsight Intersection” is the first photo that Theophilus has chosen to release. In conjunction with appearing in 20 21 Artists in Support of Human Rights Watch, Theophilus has recently launched his Instagram page @theodocphoto on which he’ll be exhibiting his work.

Theophilus Donoghue was recommended to 20 21 Artists in support of Human Rights Watch by Steve Schapiro.
