- In what way is ART a tool for activism?

By creating experiences through new tools and strategies, involving technologies that disrupt conventional wisdom about our perceived relationship with the natural environment, we can generate awareness as to how creativity can be a catalyst in a transdisciplinary approach to visualize and shape our future and initiate change through mind- and peaceful actions.

- In what way does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

The work chosen for HRW titled “Through Oceanic Futures” is a contemplation of ice shapes and textures as planetary and human “bodies” which are intertwined in one another’s currents - be they ecological, political, or physical. Understanding our trans-corporeal implications in the bodily waters of other beings - humans or other animals - as well as on a planetary scale, allows us to recognize our interconnectedness and common origin in the immensity of the oceans and our responsibility for the entire ecosystem we belong to.

- What gives you hope?

Sunrises! They occur despite anything.

BIO

Margo Trushina metaphorically explores pathways of relating through sculpture, video, photography, installation, and interventions. Using a wide range of materials - from stainless steel and neon to living plants, corals, breast milk, photography, moving image, and sound the artist transcends the distinctions between the organic and the artificial. Her artistic practice engages with the newest discoveries in the fields of neuroscience and environmentally conscious practices. Current challenges - such as the melting glaciers, the extinction of plant species, the mutation of animals or pandemics, and how humanity is called to coexist with these realities - become the territory of a unique artistic exploration and alchemic process of transformation. The topics are articulated through the prism of personal bodily experiences and the aesthetic investigation of their possible reception, resulting in the creation of hybrid sculptures and living installations. Visual, tactile and sound-based interactions reveal new connections and ways of participating and reflecting. Margo Trushina was born in Moscow, Russia in 1981 and currently lives and works both in London, UK and Moscow.︎ Her work has been extensively exhibited in venues such as the Royal Academy of Arts (London, UK), the Museum of Modern Art (Turin, Italy), the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (Moscow, Russia), SFER IK (Tulum, Mexico) and many others.︎ In 2020 she was the winner of the Ruinart art patron grant (2020), awarded at the occasion of the Cosmoscow art fair.
