Kim Schwanhäußer

- In what way is ART a tool for activism?

Art has the power to change people, it is a universal language that has the ability to overcome all boundaries and challenges of generations and nations all over the world. It can make us think about our life and behavior, revealing the blind spots of society.

- In what way does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

This year has made us realize how vulnerable our lives are. How we walked through life taking many things for granted and ordinary. We were forced to slow down, confined to our homes not being able to travel around the globe. During this time nature has been able to recover, showing what drastic impact we as humans have on our environment. Without nature, we are lost. This picture of a meadow I took in my neighborhood just next to a frequented road, it hardly finds any recognition and usually everyone passes by without seeing its breathtaking beauty. It is full of life and we need to protect them because they carry the future of our lives.

- What gives you hope?

People who dedicate their lives to something they believe in, people with passion and visionaries who are able to bring change to the world.

BIO

The images of Kim Schwanhäußer (born 1991) depict her curiosity, fascination and admiration for the beauty of nature, focusing mainly on flora and fauna. It is often the most common subject like studies of flowers or forests she portrays and manages to show in her unique way of seeing. Attempting to not only capture beauty, but also wanting to challenge the viewer to examine and study her motives, paying more attention to details. Her series about dead and living moths and butterflies, as well as her pictures of bird wings are like a rediscovery of these creatures, revealing the unseen. The approach of creating images based on the old craftsmanship of darkroom printing, making handmade silver gelatin prints and platinum prints by herself shows her dedication to the old art of photography.
