- In what way is ART a tool for activism?

I believe art has the power to stand above systems and be a force of change in itself, a way of dismantling realities and investigating across subjects. It becomes a creative political tool that can shapeshift and take any type of form. Art doesn't have any rules it needs to apply to, it can voice what others may not be able to articulate.

- In what way does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

Paradox Tale of logic gate is a fictional tale looking at the foundation of trauma caused by separation, isolation, and adaptation. Voicing how self-control, self-censorship coexist with a sense of alienation in a citizen (Citizen 000 002). The work also weaves in how technology gives rise to mythmaking and becomes an act of warfare. 2020 is exceptional in that sense where all nations have been facing a collective sense of isolation, with a huge amount of confusion of not knowing what facts are real and how to adapt to this new reality. It has also been a year where western society has been shaken in its privilege and been forced to experience a new perspective and vulnerability.

- What gives you hope?

Hope is for me an impermanence state, but having the privilege to create, explore and put things at risk is what gives me hope. I also do feel that each moment of hope requires a new sense of hope, it is a never-ending loop of hope, struggle, and effort.

BIO

Farvash (b. Iran) is an artist based in Sweden working at the intersection of art and technology. It is a practice in flux yet focused on transformative processes, from the exploration of micro-realities to the navigation of contemporary immigrant guilt.

Farvash’s work has three core strands: one rooted deeply in Persian mythology, history, and ontology. Another addressing the de- and reconstruction of identity in relation to trauma, isolation, and the personal experience of war and migration. Stemming from her background in the field of chemistry, a third explores the relationship between matter and non-matter, the seen/unseen, and how matter can both materialise and disappear. Her practice is realised on multiple territories, from minute material components to the scale of sculpture, installation and performance. Farvash’s works are micro-realities in which each reality holds its own systems of logic, matter, and persona – all entwined with personal anecdotes and trauma.

She holds two MA´s, Contemporary art (critical practice) from Royal College of art 2020, MFA Experience Design, Konstfack 2010. She has over a decade of experience working within the intersection of art and technology. Developed multiple materials as well as security effects for future banknotes worldwide. Today she works full time with her art practice.

Farvash was recommended to 20 21 Artists for Human Rights Watch by Artist Helene Schmitz.
