-In what way is ART a tool for activism?

As I explore our relation to, and conflict, with Nature, my work has always been a tool for provoking awareness. I strive to formulate new questions as to where we are as a species, and of course where we are heading, as the global climate change affects us all. By inviting the viewers to see themselves in a bigger picture, they may also take action in their own lives.

-In what way does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

I chose the burning `Owl ` from my series Residence of Impermanence. A precious trophy animal that was set on fire as a performance and a ritual - to set the animal free while protesting on how we treat Nature in general. The same Nature we for some reason believed was permanent.

-What gives you hope?

As cliché as it may sound, the younger generation gives me hope. My 18 year old daughter, Kaya, is miles ahead of what I could even dream of when I was at that age. 2020 has been a disaster in so many ways, but it has made us aware of how vulnerable humans are as a species. The pendulum of change has reached its limit and hopefully we can revert to something more sustainable.

BIO

Norwegian artist Christian Houge explores the relationship and conflict between Man and Nature with photography as his main medium. His projects span from subject matters such as Wolfs, Arctic Technology, The Global Seed-vault, Global warming and burning taxidermy trophies. For the past four years Houge has documented disappearing glaciers with an analog panoramic camera. Houge’s work directly connects to current worldwide issues. Through his work, he makes powerful statements on the global impact of the clash between Man’s ego and Nature’s fragility— as glaciers melt and sea levels rise, forests disappear and species become extinct.
