-In what way is ART a tool for activism?

It is a communication platform so it can be used that way if you want it too.

-In what ways does your chosen piece for HRW reflect 2020?

I always felt the photo shows a man within nature but this year it looks as if the man is imprisoned, no freedom. Thankfully he looks serene, shows endurance.

-What gives you hope?

Young people fighting for their future.

BIO

Photographer, filmmaker, and video-maker Anton Corbijn earned the artistic recognition he always craved by capturing, in portraits, the psychological complexities of Gerhard Richter, Alexander McQueen, Marlene Dumas, Tom Waits, and myriad other influential artists, musicians, models, and designers. “He sees pleasure through guilty eyes and he sees good and evil in very dramatic ways," U2’s Bono says of Corbijn. Known for their intimacy, soft contours, and nuanced natural light, his photographic portraits emanate stillness, endowed almost with a sculptural quality. Stemming from his love of music—he began his photographic career working for popular music magazines, has worked on over 150 album covers, and directed many music videos—Corbijn also produced a series of Cindy Sherman-style self-portraits wherein he posed as deceased rock legends including Elvis and Kurt Cobain. The last 15 years he has turned his attention to directing feature films.
